6 Common Types of Fences for Yards

Published by MW Fence Company on 7-2-2024

When it comes to choosing a fence for your yard, there are several factors to consider. From aesthetics to privacy and security, the type of fence you select can greatly impact the overall look and functionality of your outdoor space. In this blog post, we will explore some of the different types of fences for yards and highlight their unique features and benefits.

1. Wood Fences:

Wood fences are one of the most popular and traditional choices for yard fencing. They offer a timeless and natural look that can complement any architectural style. With various designs to choose from, such as picket, privacy, or split rail, you can easily find a wood fence that suits your preferences. Wood fences provide good privacy and can be stained or painted in different colors to match your home's exterior. MW Fence Co offers pressure-treated pine and western red cedar materials for wood fences. We recommend using steel posts with the western red cedar so the fence will stay nice and straight over time. Pressure-treated pine is subject to warping, twisting, bending, and bowing as it dries, whereas western red cedar resists this.

2. Vinyl Fences:

For homeowners seeking a low-maintenance option, vinyl fences are an excellent choice. They are resistant to moisture, fading, and cracking, making them incredibly durable. Vinyl fences also come in a wide array of styles, including privacy, scalloped, and lattice designs. While they may have a higher upfront cost than wood fences, vinyl fences require minimal upkeep, saving you time and money in the long run. All you should have to do is pressure wash them once in a while to keep the dust, dirt, and mold from building up.

3. Chain Link Fences:

Chain link fences are known for their affordability, durability, and versatility.  They are commonly used for both residential and commercial properties. While they don't provide much privacy, they are highly effective for security purposes. Additionally, chain link fences are easy to install and require very little maintenance. For added privacy, you can attach slats or vegetation to the chain link, offering an inexpensive solution. Black vinyl-coated chain links have become quite popular. It almost gives the fence the wrought iron appeal, and doesn’t cost a fortune…in fact, it’s not much higher than a standard galvanized chain link.

4. Metal Fences:

Metal fences, such as aluminum or steel, offer both security and aesthetics. They can be designed to appear ornamental or sleek, depending on your preference. Metal fences are durable and long-lasting, often designed to withstand harsh weather conditions. While wrought iron fences require regular maintenance, aluminum fences are virtually maintenance-free due to their rust-resistant qualities. If you are installing around a saltwater pool, you will need aluminum as the salt will really corrode the steel.

5. Composite Fences:

Composite fences are a blend of wood fibers and plastic materials, creating a fence that mimics the natural appearance of wood but offers superior durability and low maintenance. These fences don't rot, require no painting or staining, and are resistant to termites. Composite fences are available in various colors and textures, allowing you to customize your yard's appearance while enjoying the benefits of a long-lasting and low-maintenance fence. They are very heavy and costly, more than double what standard wood costs.

6. Bamboo Fences:

While we currently don’t offer bamboo fencing materials, this may be an option we offer in the future as we continue to grow and serve the needs of our community. If you are interested in a bamboo fence, please don’t hesitate to contact us for more information regarding the availability of this type of fencing material! Nevertheless, we still wanted to provide information on bamboo and guide our customers on the types of fences used for yards.

Bamboo fences are considered an eco-friendly and unique option. These fences provide a natural, tropical look to any yard and are known for their sustainability and durability. Bamboo fences can be easily installed, and their density offers good privacy. However, they may require occasional maintenance to prevent mold or rot due to their organic nature.

When selecting a fence for your yard, consider your requirements and priorities. If privacy is crucial, a wood or vinyl fence may be the best choice. For security purposes, chain link or metal fences are recommended. Meanwhile, if you're focused on an environmentally friendly option, bamboo or composite fences are worth exploring.
